Tartan gets its first road game this week

Tartan High School’s football team had the luxury of opening the season with back-to-back home games. Now that week three has arrived, the Titans will get their first chance to head out on the road.

Tartan’s week three game is at North at 7 p.m.

The Titans opened the season with a 26-13 victory over Hill-Murray in week one and hosted Mahtomedi in week two, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

A year ago, Tartan’s season-opening win over Hill-Murray was its only win of the season. The Titans are hoping that’s not the case in 2016.

Tartan couldn’t have gotten on the board much faster than it did against Hill-Murray. The Titans’ Kingston Myles fielded the opening kickoff at his own three-yard line and didn’t stop running until he had covered the 97 yards between him and the Pioneers’ end zone.

Tartan also scored the second touchdown of the game later in the first quarter when Joevon Walker hauled in a 12-yard scoring pass from Marco Hernandez. A pair of failed two-point conversion attempts left the Titans with a 12-0 lead after one quarter.

The Titans tried to go into halftime without giving up any points, but Hill-Murray had other ideas. The Pioneers broke up Tartan’s shutout bid with a one-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.

Tartan played most of the third quarter with only a six-point lead but remedied that situation in a hurry. Myles scored his second TD of the game late in the third on an 87-yard touchdown pass from Hernandez.

Hill-Murray got in on the big-play action in the fourth quarter by scoring on a 63-yard touchdown pass to once again make it a one-score game.

Tartan had one final answer to put the game away, however. Cyrus Kalkwarf sealed the victory for the Titans on a 46-yard touchdown run.

The North team that hosts Tartan on Friday opened its season with a 42-6 loss to South St. Paul and traveled to St. Thomas Academy in week two.
