Mounds View boys take fourth at cross country state meet

The fourth-place finish posted by the Mounds View High School boys cross country team at the state meet last weekend was the fifth-best in the history of the program. It was also the Mustangs’ best performance at state in 17 years.

Mounds View, running as a team at the state meet for the second year in a row and the fifth time in six years, finished with 156 points based on the finish of its top five runners. The only teams that finished ahead of Mounds View in the state-meet team standings were the three that were ranked higher in the final state coaches poll.

Wayzata won the state title for the third time in four years and the sixth time in 10 years. The Trojans’ top five runners finished in the top 22 overall and the top 11 among runners from the 16 state-qualifying teams. Wayzata’s team score was 38.

Edina was second at 91 points and Maple Grove was third with 128 points.

Mounds View’s team score was based on the finishes of senior Ezekiel Elliot, juniors David Dahl and Joey Lawson and sophomores Austin Streit and Lucas Hessini. Lelinga finished 25th overall with a time of 16:24.8.

Dahl was next across the finish line for Mounds View with a time of 16:38.4, which put him in 39th place overall. Streit finished 52nd in 16:49.0, Hessini took 78th in 17:08.3 and Lawson landed in 84th place with a time of 17:12.2.

Also running in the state meet were junior Anders Bandt (98th, 17:17.5) and senior Tim Pease (146th, 17:47.4).

The only teams in the history of Mounds View’s program that have finished higher at state than this year’s team were the 1983, 1984 and 1999 squads, which all finished second and the 1989 team, which took third.

The 2016 state meet was Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
