A Dakota County grand jury indicted a South St. Paul man on Dec. 8 for first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with a shooting at a Burnsville Dollar Tree store.

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced Grant David Hendrickson, 27, of South St. Paul, has been indicted with multiple crimes in connection to the death of Donald Joseph Hortsch, 69, of Rosemount, and the attempted shooting death and assault of a 27-year-old male on Nov. 7.

Hendrickson is facing multiple premeditated and intentional first- and second-degree murder charges, along with assault charges and a possession of a pistol by a prohibited person charge.

The facts and circumstances surrounding this incident are contained in the criminal complaint filed on Nov. 9.

Hendrickson allegedly shot Hortsch and the other victim after an altercation at the Dollar Tree. A witness said she heard a scuffle toward the back of the store before seeing a man exit and then re-enter the store a short time later firing a gun. According to the criminal complaint, the witness followed the vehicle the man drove away in and observed him throw what she believed to be a gun into a nearby dumpster.

This witness later identified Hendrickson and the vehicle. Officers located a handgun in the dumpster area the witness described.

The complaint stated Hendrickson told police he acted in self-defense.

Backstrom expressed his sympathy to the family and friends of Hortsch whose life was lost in this incident and to the other shooting victim who suffered disabling injuries. Hendrickson made his first court appearance on Dec. 8 and bail in the case was continued at $1.5 million without conditions and $1 million with conditions by Judge Michael Mayer.

Hendrickson’s next court appearance is on Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Hastings.
