Irondale girls hockey gearing up for the post-season

With only five teams left in the North Suburban Conference this season, the Irondale High School girls hockey team had plenty of room on its schedule for non-conference games. The Knights ended up with some challenging contests outside of league play and they’re hoping that hard work pays off when the playoffs begin next month.
The regular season is down to just two weeks left and the Knights are using their final games to get into post-season mode.

Irondale skier has big week

Mattie Watts put together quite a week recently. The Irondale High School senior is an accomplished Nordic (cross country) skier and put those talents to good use last week.
Early in the week, Watts competed in the U.S. national championships in Utah and performed well enough to make the U18 national team. She will take part in an international competition called the Scando Cup later this month in Finland.

MVHS boys swim nabs first victory

Meet victories have been hard to come by for the Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team so far this season. The Mustangs dropped their first three Suburban East Conference dual meets but broke into the win column last week.
Mounds View notched victory No. 1 by outscoring Cretin-Derham Hall 105-78 at the recently-renovated Chippewa Middle School pool. The Mustangs won 10 of the 12 events to pick up the victory.

Mustangs hoping to build on recent success

The Mounds View High School boys basketball team did not close out the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule on much of a high note. The Mustangs dropped three of four prior to the break.
Following a couple of days off for Christmas, Mounds View returned to action and picked up a pair of wins in a holiday tournament and added to the win streak with a conference victory last Friday.

MVHS girls hockey looking to get on a roll

After losing only one regular-season game last year and returning a solid nucleus, the Mounds View High School girls hockey team was expected to be a force again this season. The season didn’t start out the way many had hoped, however, as the Mustangs went winless in their first four games.

Deep senior class hopes to continue success

Last year’s Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team enjoyed an excellent season - a 7-2 dual-meet record, third place in the Suburban East Conference, true-team section runner-up, and Minnesota State High School League Section 5AA runner-up. They capped off the season with a strong eighth-place finish at state, led by All-American Noah Lucas, who was the Class AA state champion in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyles, both in state record time. As a team, the Mustangs set six new school records in 2012-2013.

Mounds View gymnasts return deep lineup

The Mounds View High School gymnastics team has been rising through the ranks in Section 5AA the last few years and appeared poised to break through and capture a section team title. That plan was put on hold, however, as state powerhouse Roseville was moved from Section 4AA to 5AA for the past two years.
This year, Roseville, the two-time defending state champion, has returned to 4AA, leaving 5AA once again up for grabs. Mounds View head coach Julie Coopet likes her team’s chances come mid-February.
