Big turnout for Maplewood primary
Incumbents moving on

Derrick Knutson
Review staff

Maplewood voters decided at the Sept. 15 primary election that incumbent Mayor Diana Longrie will face challenger Will Rossbach, a current council member, in the Nov. 3 general election for Maplewood Mayor.
Incumbent City Council member Kathy Juenemann joins challengers Rebecca Cave, James Llanas and Dave Hafner in the race for two council seats.
Juenemann was first elected to the council in 2001.
Rebecca Cave is a former city council member, having served one term, from 2004-2008, and runs a small business.
James Llanas is a former candidate for city council and is a computer sales executive. Hafner is the only successful candidate who hasn't run for office in Maplewood. He is a St. Paul firefighter.
The breakdown, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State's Web site:

Mayor's race:
Will Rossbach 1,457 32.24 %
Diana Longrie 843 19.81
Ken Smart 712 16.73
Marv Koppen 617 14.5
Bob Cardinal 547 12.86
John Wykoff 54 1.27
Fran Grant 25 0.59

Council race:
Kathleen Juenemann 1,759 22 %
James Llanas 1,415 17.7
Dave Hafner 911 11.4
Rebecca Cave 871 10.9
Delray Rokke 828 10.36
Dick Seppala 650 8.13
Elizabeth Sletten 414 5.18
Robert Martin 370 4.63
Mary Mackey 351 4.39
Mark Bradley Jr. 266 3.33
Julie Binko 159 1.99

City Clerk/Citizen Services Manager Karen Guifoile said 4,268 people voted in the primaries, which is 19 percent of the registered voters in Maplewood.
Delray Rokke, who came in fifth in the council primary, lost by the narrow margin of 43 votes. Guifoile explained that if that number had been 40 it would have equated one half of 1 percent difference between his votes and Cave's votes, triggering an automatic recount. As it stands, Rokke has one week to ask for a recount, but he would have to pay for the process. Guifoile said she spoke to Rokke, and he told her that he was thinking about asking for a recount, but hadn't made a decision yet.
